When I heard that fashion supremo Karl Lagerfeld had collaborated with Australian beauty brand ModelCo to bring out an exclusive, limited edition makeup collection for Summer 2018, I was as excited as any makeup lover. This has been touted as the most anticipated makeup launch of this year.
The collection launched on May 14, and is 100% cruelty-free. There is a whole gamut of products in here - eyeshadow palettes, mascara, eyeliners, highlighters, makeup sets, makeup brushes, lip toppers, lip glosses, matte liquid lipsticks... pretty much everything except foundation itself. All products are one-stock-drop only.
I have the matte liquid lipsticks to show you. These are called the Lip Lights - as you've probably guessed, there is a light when you open the tube, which means you can apply this lipstick in the dark or in low light without accidentally endowing your ears in scarlet. There are eight shades in the matte liquid lipstick range, and each one costs £22 - for a 6ml tube.

Let's have a look at the packaging first. Plastic overkill. There's enough plastic in here to ruin my low-plastic efforts and upend my eco-footprint for the next six months. A complete waste. They could just have wrapped these in a seal, or at least done a cardboard box a la Jouer, Laura Geller, Beauty Bakerie, and so many others. Huda Beauty wraps her Lip Mattes in plastic, but those, I can store them in for all eternity, whereas this is throwaway plastic, and it is a huge pain in the wrong place to put the lipsticks back into that finicky plastic packaging. Boo!
Once out of all that wrapping, they certainly are eye-grabbing. You get Karl Lagerfeld's head as the lid, complete with his unsmiling visage, sunglasses, little tie, and a ponytail at the back. Neat! Someone told me on YouTube that these actually resemble PEZ candy dispensers, and I think she's hit the nail on the head there. Wouldn't it be awesome if brands had lipsticks with fun lids, like this one? Bags I all the Lord of the Rings and Jungle Book themed ones.
Before I show you the demo, let's have a quick look at some of the other products in the Karl Lagerfeld x ModelCo collection. This is the Choupette Eyeshadow Palette; there are two variants. Cute packaging, though I wish there were some Summery colour options.
This is the makeup brush set. I wish I had got these.
I'm not sure I see the point of these stickers, but to each their own....
These are the highlighters. I love the pattern on them, and the colours are perfect. Now I wish I had got these instead of the lippies, though at the time I thought the lippies were the best choice.
