After spending the first quarter of 2016 recovering from a bad staph infection, I now have a full-fledged skincare routine in place, complete with gentle cleansing, acid, hydrating mist, serum, facial oil and moisturiser at night. While the core remains the same, I rotate a couple of products every few days. Over the last month, I have been documenting my nightly routine every few days on my Instagram, and here is what I have been using.
Scroll down for a round-up of my beauty routine in May 2016.
I begin my evening routine with a gentle cleanser - usually clay-based if I haven't worn makeup; or a clarifying cleanser if I feel congested. Last month, I've been loving the REN Clearcalm Clay Cleanser (buy here) and now have backups of backups. This is one of the most affordable "good" cleansers out there.
If I feel a spot coming on, I use Sonya Dakar Silver Clarifying Wash because - silver. For days when my skin feels dry and flaky, I've been using Ole Henriksen Pure Truth Melting Cleanser (buy here) - this feels like orange marmalade and emulsifies into citrusy milk. I double cleanse only on days when I've worn a full-face of makeup.
The cleanser is followed by either Pixi Glow Tonic (buy here), or Peter Thomas Roth Unwrinkle Pads. See here for a list of my favourite acid treatment products.
I then spritz on a quick dash of mist or neutralise with a moisturising toner. Favourites in May were Pixi Hydrating Milky Mist (buy here) - which contains Hyaluronic Acid and will therefore encourage deeper absorption of subsequent products - and Caudalie Moisturising Toner.
I have been loving Caudalie Polyphenol C15 Serum (buy here) and Ling Skincare Oxygen Plasma Potion so much so that I've repurchased both. I also like the lightweight Grown Alchemist's Detox Serum Antioxidant 3, but it is so runny that I need to decant the whole thing into a spray-on bottle.
An essence I absolutely love after my serum is the Antonia Burrell Forest Dew Skin Conditioner (buy it here). The silkiest and most luxurious essence imaginable, and it is 100% botanical. Full review to follow.
For moisturising, I've been using the Caudalie Vinosource Moisturising Sorbet. It is lightweight enough for me to want to repurchase. When I wanted something heavier, I used Decleor Aroma Night Beauty Cream or Cellnique Oasis Gel (PR sample, reviewed here). I suspect the Decleor would be more suitable for dry skinned people, though.
In lieu of thick moisturisers, I sometimes use a luxurious facial oil - MV Organic Skincare Rose Plus Booster for hydration, and Pai Rosehip Bioregenerate Oil (buy here) on nights I feel a bit congested. The latter is a brilliant choice for acne-prone skin. I use it once or twice a week.
Finally, I use a resurfacing product once a week. I like Alpha-H Liquid Gold Rejuvenating Cream, which also works well as a final step, unless most glycolic acid products.
