Makeup removal in the evenings is a compulsory ritual for me. One that I have grown to enjoy. A far cry from my university days when I would come home from some party or the other and just fall into bed, face-first, shoes and all. We have all been there.
I have more pores on my face than stars in the sky, so I need to get all the gunk out of them every day if I am to prevent breakouts. Worse, sometimes, the makeup remover itself may break me out. My skin is incredibly sensitve. Which is why I try to avoid oil-based makeup removers and anything with harsh surfactants. Even two-phase makeup removers have been known to break me out.
For those with sensitive skin, micellar water is a great makeup remover in lieu of harsher foaming cleansers or oil-based products. A "micelle" is a round group of surfactant molecules. Any product with surfactants will form round micelles. But unlike regular soapy water and two-phase makeup removers, the micelles in "Micellar Water" are incredibly mild and low-foaming, at the same time, they do a great job in cleaning the skin without irritating. They also form around toxic molecules, thereby making the product gentler and protecting the skin.
Read on for my review of the Nuxe Micellar Cleansing Water.
French-based natural luxury brand Nuxe has been a favourite of mine ever since I saw them on Feelunique.com last year. I love their Huile Prodigeuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil, and their hand cream, moisturisers, masks and other skincare.
The Micellar Cleansing Water comes in a pale pink plastic bottle. It contains rose petals and is suitable for sensitive skin and for removing face, eye and lip makeup. The product itself looks just like water but with a mild, pleasant fragrance. You pour a few drops on a cotton pad and gently wipe your face with it. There is alcohol in this cleanser, but it does not dry out my face - although that could be because nothing can ever dry out my oily face!
Makeup removal with Nuxe Micellar Cleansing Water
From left to right, I have the following products - Mikyajy Sabaya Lipstick (Reviewed here), Revlon Colorstay eyeliner, Mikyajy Coffee Eyes palette (reviewed here), MUFE Aqua Liner (horizontal swatch - reviewed here), Benefit Hello Flawless Foundation, Lancome Hypnose Doll Eyes Waterproof Mascara reviewed here, Too Faced Starry Eyed Glitter Liquid liner, Chanel Rouge Double Intensite in Rose Quartz and Chanel Rouge Double Intensite in Rose Garnet, reviewed here.
One swipe of Nuxe Micellar Water gives me this. Not very neat; the mascara has smudged in a straight line. All lipsticks have stayed put. The glitter eyeliner has spread out.
With one swipe over all that war paint, the cotton pad has taken in quite a lot!
Two swipes give you this. Everything has gone except for the lipsticks.
A thorough scrubbing does this. Those lipsticks stay on through pizza, so nothing can shake them. Mikyajy disappears sooner than Chanel, which will stay on until it chooses to give up residence.
The cotton pad ends up looking like this:
Now the point here is that Chanel Rouge Double Intensite and Mikyajy Sabaya do not budge anyway, unless I shower, brush my teeth, apply a lip scrub and use makeup remover. Everything else goes off nicely without my turning my skin black and blue.
Summary
I prefer Micellar water to any other kind of makeup removers now. I have been using Bioderma as well, though I have a slight preference for Nuxe because it feels gentler and smells nicer. You can buy this from Feelunique.com, BeautyBay.com, or LookFantastic.com or HQhair.com - all of them ship worldwide. Prices vary slightly, so do look around. Incidentally, lookfantastic.com has some great offers going on now. Use code BEAUTIFUL for 10% off your order.
