I recently bought my first indie nail polishes from Carpe Noctem Cosmetics' Etsy shop (see post here) and couldn't wait to play with some of those glitters. Here is a manicure with Reflection in Flames over Givenchy Vernis Please! nail polish in Fancy Beige.
Reflection in Flames is part of the Samhain collection and has black square and hex and orange hex and round glitter. The formula is smooth and you don't need to fish around for the glitter. The polish applies evenly and you get quite a bit of glitter on the nails with two coats of polish. Photographs are in natural light and don't do justice to the sheer awesomeness of the glitter.
I did wonder which polish to pair it with, though. I didn't want an orange, which would merge with the topper. Nor did I want a huge contrasting colour which would shout down the glitter. I discussed the base colour with Emily herself, who mixed the gorgeous glitter polish, and she suggested tan. I hit on Givenchy Vernis Please! nail polish in 104 Fancy Beige, which is a pearly tan more than a beige in natural light (below).
Usually, I find that high-end brands pale in comparison to specialised polish-makers when it comes to nail polish. I've tried nail polish from all the high-end cosmetics brands mentioned in my labels below (don't want to name each one as I know I'll get hate mail) and find they don't come close to the best of O.P.I., China Glaze or Zoya. Anyone arguing needs to try some of the cremes from the Big Three, as I call them. So I had very few expectations from the Givenchy nail polish.
However, I was in for a surprise. I wouldn't say the formula of the Vernis Please pips O.P.I.'s best cremes such as You Don't Know Jacques (here), but it is definitely as easy to apply as Zoya cremes or even O.P.I. shimmers and frosts such as Melon of Troy (here) or Yoga-ta Get This Blue (here). Comparable to the formula of China Glaze Four Leaf Clover (here) though Spontaneous (here) is a tad nicer.
There was opacity with just the one coat, though I piled on a second one for blooper-correction. The formula spread evenly and nicely. I wouldn't call this colour beige, though, fancy or not. It is definitely more tan than beige and looks orange gold in direct sunlight (picture above).
The top coat used is Rimmel Pro Super Wear Ultra Shine Top Coat which I love for the thick glossy finish that stays on for as long as the entire mani. I think the colour goes well with the glitter topper (above picture indoors). This is my entry for the "orange-themed" second round of the Nail Art Challenge titled Falling Through The Rainbow. The day after tomorrow, the manicure theme is yellow and I don't own a single yellow nail polish, which means I need to hit the stores tomorrow.
