Do you use flannel or muslin cloths to wash your face and remove makeup? I do now. Until December, I used the same towel to dry my hands and face, and admit to having used even turbie twists for drying my face at a pinch. Which, according to my derm when I consulted her over a horrible breakout, is as bad as using the same pillowcase for weeks on end. Lesson learnt, I now have separate wash cloths for the face, and change the cloth after every cleanse.
Using wash cloths for cleansing your face is not only a luxurious, pampering step in your routine, but it also improves circulation, provides gentle exfoliation and leaves your face squeaky-clean and 100% makeup-free without resorting to harsh cleansers or specialised makeup removers. Ideal facial cloths are flannel, though I use muslin if I am using an exfoliating or resurfacing cleanser or following with a peel. Here are the best face cleansing cloths out there, in descending order.
Scroll down for a list of the best flannel wash cloths for cleansing your face.
Flannel cloths first:
Omorovicza Cleansing Mitt
Omorovicza. Made in France. Need I say more? Rather than a mitt per se, it is a large rectangular "glove" made of 100% cotton. Beautifully soft, thick flannel, generous size. I want multiples. Price: £10.Buy it here (everything ships worldwide).
Hydréa London Bamboo Luxury Dual Sided Washcloth
Joint-favourite with the one above. I have four of these but want about 10 on rota. One side is 100% bamboo cotton. Super-exfoliating. Ideal for the body. I also use it to pat my face dry without abrasion. The other side is pure velvety soft flannel. Not thin muslin, like Emma Hardie. Raw material sourced from Egypt; made in the UK. A great budget option at £5.50 each.Buy it here.
Human+Kind Deep Cleansing Cloth
The gentlest overall. One side is soft - the other side is softer. Neither side is muslin, thank goodness. Reviewed here. Bought from Sephora Italy; costs €6.95 for the duo pack. Kicking myself for buying just one two-pack.Sarah Chapman Skinesis Professional Cleansing Mitts
I would love these mitts all the more if they were just a tad larger. These only cover half my (smallish) hand. Which is sufficient but Omorovicza and Hydrea have spoilt me. There is an exfoliating - but not harshly so - side and a softer side; both flannel. Lovely texture, but whinging about the size. Costs £14 for a pack of four mitts.Buy it here.
Emma Hardie Dual Action Cleansing Cloth
This would have ranked higher if one side had not been the flimsiest white muslin. I love the flannel side. But the muslin? Bleargh. I know a lot of people say these are the "best face cloths ever". I would agree had I not used the ones listed above. The muslin side is too thin. Comes with the Amazing Fae Moringa Cleansing Balm. Costs £15 for three.Buy it here.
Elemis Luxury Cleansing Cloth
Nice non-abrasive texture. Both sides are the same. Thinnest among the flannels listed here. Would have ranked higher if both sides were different and if the cloth were a tad thicker. Comes with the Collagen Cleansing Balm. Costs £10 for a duo pack.Buy it here.
Over to the muslin cloths now:
Pai Organic Muslin Face Cloth
Textured, 100% organic, unbleached bamboo muslin. Absorbs water like a dream. Easy to over-exfoliate because of the texture. I also love that this is the only unbleached muslin of the lot. Comes with the Pai Hydrating Face Cleanser and in kits. The other muslin cloths available are bleached white. Price: £3.Buy it here.
Soap & Glory Muslin Cloth
Muslin, but slightly thicker than Eve Lom. Comes with the Ultimelt Hot Cloth Cleanser, which, despite going through my second tube, I have never got around to reviewing.Aurelia Bamboo Muslin (To the right in above photo)
You could swallow three of these with a spoonful of water. No, really. Made of antibacterial bamboo muslin. £18 for packet of seven. Also comes with the brilliant Probiotic Cleanser - review soon!Buy it here.
Eve Lom Muslin Cleansing Cloth (extreme left in photo above)
Plain ol' muslin. I'm sorry. If you wore this material as a dress, people would ask you why you were naked. I love the cleanser, but not the cloth. Similar to Liz Earle, which is why that brand has not been listed separately here. Costs £14 for three - Sarah Chapman, Emma Hardie... pretty much everything listed above is a better option, both price- and quality-wise.Buy it here.
All the cloths packed away nicely as they await daily rotation:
